A good portion of my childhood was spent in this log library in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Born a bookworm in the small town of Fairbanks, Alaska, I can still remember my mother saying, "Didn't you just get back from the library?" "Why do you have to read so fast?" "Why do you have to read so much?"
But to me, the only thing more exciting than books were pulpy newspapers and glossy magazines. My first piece of writing was a story I entered in a contest at Denali Grade School where I was a student. I won an honorable mention for my efforts. My first published writing, a short story I wrote as a teenager, was published in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.
At the time, I had no idea I would become a writer. I just liked to read. When I left home at the age of seventeen to go to college, my goal was to be a medical technologist and have an apartment; and that's just what I did, until one day while sitting in my studio apartment in Denver, I pulled out the portable Olivetti my parents gave me for leaving home. I've been writing between naps ever since.
Since returning to school to study journalism and creative writing, I've written dozens of articles and essays about everything from home and garden to health, food, nature, parenting, Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. I particularly enjoy writing features about artists and small businesses, as well as essays that offer a bit of insight and humor. ---
